PennDOT officials told PennLive that a few people recently broke into the area – which is state-owned – and set up tents before being removed by police.
A biowaste company was hired to remove hypodermic needles and other waste from the area, PennDOT says.
Once the waste was removed, PennDOT brought in large rocks – to deter people from breaking into the area and setting up tents/mattresses – and repaired the fencing, officials say. City officials will continue to monitor the area beneath the bridge to make sure nobody else tries to break in and said more permanent fencing would be the next step if problems continue. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
