TRURO, N.S. — Team Nova Scotia’s male hockey team lost their opening game at the Canada Winter Games to Team Alberta. The final margin of victory was three ...

We adopted the nickname ‘The Home Team’ for the 1987 Canada Winter Games which took place in Sydney and surrounding area which, for us on the hockey team, including Glace Bay and the Miners Forum. Joey Smith’s male hockey team lost their opening game at the Canada Winter Games to Team Alberta. The final margin of victory was three goals. It was way back in 1987 at the Games hosted in and around Sydney, Cape Breton and I was part of that losing side in a game that took place at the.

The six-team Mainland Junior ‘B’ League was going to surrender two cards per team which would be filled by Nova Scotia’s best junior-aged players – whether playing in the local junior ‘A’ league or elsewhere – who would fulfill the junior ‘B’ requirement by appearing in the set number of games for the team whose cards they were using.

The only other junior ‘B’ Bearcat to make it was Kirk Johnstone who was from New Glasgow but playing in Truro while attending the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, and I always believed Salmon River’s Jeff Lambourne, my long-time teammate in both hockey and fastpitch, would have made the final cut if not for injuring his knee during the try-outs.

And that’s my hope for all our athletes at the Games, currently going on throughout P.E.I., podium finish or not.
