In Canada\u0027s capital, we decided that routing heavy truck traffic through residential and tourist neighbourhoods was the thing to do. Really?

That route only works if you’re driving a car. I emphasize this point to show that when we talk about #autowa, it’s not just in the sense of the city being actively hostile to anyone not driving a private motor vehicle. It also has it in for truck drivers who, I’ll bet, don’t enjoy having to negotiate narrow inner-city roads filled with pedestrians, cyclists and tourists darting this way and that on their way to the BeaverTails stand.

As the story in the Citizen explains, building a new bridge over the Ottawa River and sending trucks there “wouldn’t do much to reduce the numbers of trucks on that route by more than 10 or 15 per cent, according to a 2021 National Capital Commission study.”Article content
