IT’S HARD to imagine a time when television or sports journalists couldn’t refer to video footage of a footballer performing with grace and skill on the pitch in the modern age. But this was the backdrop of the world whenWith his youthful looks and dazzling skill, he was a Prince to those around him, fans of his generation and beyond would go on to describe him as the ‘King’. And rightly so.
Pele is a sporting icon on par with Muhammed Ali. I know this is a bold claim however not only did they share the same time and space in the sporting world. Pele’s skill made it difficult for people to hate him. He was just too damn good and his performances elevated Brazil into the conscious mind of the football world as it was then. Pele is iconic in every way because he did it first and because he is black.. And he was the first to win 3 World Cups. This is important and should never be forgotten.
This was such a memorable moment on the world stage of sport but no real love in relation to naming rights. We spend a considerable amount of time sharing and agreeing on the achievements of someone when they leave this mortal world.In relation to Pele, this may have diminished over time as we are faced with the non-stop conveyor belt of European football coverage and controlled debates.
