Allegedly impaired driver sAaron Dobbs is facing a second trial in the death of 27-year-old Shawn Harpur.
The last time Ryan Chwalka saw his friend Shawn Harpur alive he was riding in the front passenger seat of a car driven by Aaron Dobbs, a man the friends had met for the first time earlier that night in Mississauga.
A first trial against Dobbs, who was employed as a Peel Region paramedic at the time, ended in a hung jury in 2021, leading to his case being scheduled for a retrial this month before a judge alone in Milton. Police soon discovered the vehicle was in the water; Harpur’s body was found about eight hours later, some 200 metres up the shoreline, the Crown said. An autopsy revealed that he died from a combination of hypothermia and drowning.
The two men struck up a conversation, and that led to Chwalka offering Dobbs a beer. Chwalka and Harpur also shared a small quantity of cocaine and the three men made plans to go to Dobbs’ home, Chwalka said. “I don’t recall any major concerns at that point,” Chwalka said, describing how the men then left for Dobbs’ Clarkson-area home.
