In a week when anonymous online threats targeting several high schools in Peel sparked fear and tension, another was directed at four elementary and middle schools, leading to beefed up security measures on Friday.
The public board said an anonymous online threat prompted hold and secure measures at Mount Royal Public School, Lougheed Middle School, Sunny View Middle School, and Mountain Ash Public School in Brampton.
“It’s pretty terrifying to read that someone wants to kill you,” said one high school teacher, who requested anonymity because she was not authorized to speak. “The board said they would bring in police and security guards, but that doesn’t make me feel safer, and kids can’t learn effectively when there’s this level of stress and fear.”
On Thursday, the Peel District School Board became aware of another anonymous online threat against Lincoln Alexander Secondary School in Mississauga, which also indicated the intended use of a weapon. Traditionally, attendance on the day before March Break is lower. But Bruce Campbell, a spokesperson with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, attributed Friday’s “significantly reduced attendance” to the online threat.
