.KentuckerAudley and simplysylvio dive into dreams for their new film Strawberry Mansion.
"Sometimes they're just the most mundane thing in the world, essentially just you sitting in a pink room, going about your day." Kentucker Audley on dreams and his new film,Everyone has dreams. Sometimes you remember them, sometimes they fade like mist in the morning. But Albert Birney remembered his last one very clearly. It involved Billie Eilish and an out-of-control canine tattoo.
Dreams are weird that way. Kentucker Audley, star and codirector with Birney of their new indie sci-fi romantic surrealist comedy, said,"I barely remember it and they hold no significant weight in my life, and sometimes they do. They are these imaginative dystopian world-is-ending, there's something heading towards Earth and it'll kill us all.
In its mixture of the serenely strange and the mundane, Audley and Birney's film evokes some of the tenderhearted and weary mindbending of Philip K. Dick, a comparison with the kind of coincidental relevance to Birney that thewriter would probably have appreciate."I used to love reading his short stories," Birney said,"and then I found out that the day he died was the day I was born. As an 18-year-old, you go, 'that's kind of cool.
The key came in that insidious idea that if you can share your dreams then you're opening a door that goes two ways, and of course that means someone will find a way to advertise to you in your sleep. The lead to one of the pivotal early scenes that, while deep in the strange slumber setting, also evokes the ubiquity of modern commercials, and how they warp your behavior. Per Birney,"Some fast food chain comes up with some new burger or some new sandwich.
