Despite the deluge of criticism, Premier Blaine Higgs may find significant support for taking a firm stance on the issue

“Just driving through” is, as most New Brunswickers know, the province’s unofficial and sardonic motto. When the Policy 713 controversy flared-up, outside observers and pundits immediately pounced and began pontificating from afar. Yet the drive-by analysts got a lot wrong, and many completely missed the mark..

Two University of New Brunswick assistant professors, Andrea Garner and Melissa Dockrill Garrett, for example, were quick to produceof instant analysis. New Brunswick’s LGBTQ “safe schools debate,” the headline declared, “makes false opponents of parents and teachers.” The piece, however, is not completely off base. Unlike most outside analysts, Fry acknowledged a few discontinuities. The premier, he noted, provided sound COVID-19 public health leadership and fended-off the anti-vaxxers throughout most of the pandemic. And he may be right that Higgs has deepened the linguistic division along the diagonal line from Moncton to Grand Falls.
