Paul Mescal boils with raw animal power in a mesmerising revival of A Streetcar Named Desire Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The playing area is a bare in-the-round square, in which Blanche, her sister Stella and Stella’s husband Stanley face up to each other like bareknuckle boxers, after Blanche arrives unexpectedly to stay with them in their cramped flat.
Frecknall has stripped this most iconic of dramas of all accumulated flap and flummery and presents it instead as a clear, vital and compelling chamber piece. Sudden jagged clashes from a drummer situated above the stage thrillingly suggest the accelerated fraying of Blanche’s already strained nerves.
When Ferran’s Blanche arrives, in a chiffon dress covered with big blowsy roses, she is a fading Southern belle jittery with manic energy, surreptitiously glugging the bourbon and sizing up her thrillingly uncouth brother-in-law. Mescal’s Stanley, boiling with raw animal power and hurtling between confidence and contrition, is a powder keg waiting to be ignited and he and Vasan’s Stella make for a couple pulsing with sex.
Ferran and Vasan’s glorious sororal interplay suggests years and layers of love, delusion and resignation. From a lost South of grand houses and opulence, they have forged wildly divergent paths in the world, paths that calamitously collide, albeit with the best of intentions, in two privacy-free rooms in a sweltering New Orleans.
