It was his way of acknowledging that he recognised me.
On their way to the stage, McCartney asked the band to pause. “He put his arms around us and made a beautiful prayer up about how ‘music is what we do and we give our music to Your service, Lord. “He’s a man who likes a sing-song around the piano; he’s like an encyclopaedia of old songs. He knows everything from the 1930s on,” says Jools Holland. Indeed, in the summer of 1968, at the height of his Beatles glory, McCartney was being driven back to London in a Rolls-Royce with a few friends after a recording session in Yorkshire, and made an unscheduled stop in Harrold, a village in Bedfordshire. He wound up leading a knees-up in the local pub.
Costello is immensely proud to have written with his musical hero, “Both of us seemed to like working fast, firing ideas back and forth until a song took shape out of just one line of melody, a couple of unusual changes or some lyrical cue.”
