While speaking on the U.S. Senate floor, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., called for “common sense” gun safety legislation following Tuesday’s mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
“If we want to get at the heart of really stopping gun violence, I beg my colleagues to pull their heads out of the sand and finally start talking about what can really address this crisis of gun violence: common-sense, gun safety legislation,” Murray said.
Murray, who has been an advocate of gun control, said the kids who were killed were murdered by weapons of war. “My heart breaks for the family and loved ones of these kids, these teachers not to mention the kids and educators who will carry the trauma of that day with them for the rest of their lives — but I’m also furious,” Murray said.
Murray also said this kind of tragedy is not inconceivable despite media descriptions of the event as unthinkable.While Washington state has dealt with measures concerning gun safety, she said such measures must be addressed at the federal level to keep communities safe across the nation. “States like mine have made good progress on gun safety measures to keep our communities safe,” Murray said.
