Iwaya Giken has been working on the project since 2012, and has conducted low-altitude tests with smaller balloons. The flights for what's known as the Open Universe Project will use a pressurized two-seat capsule that's 5 feet wide with all-around windows.last month. The first five passengers are to be selected in October, with flights due to take off from the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido in December or later, depending on weather.
