The hard for out-of-staters to pronounce Forked River Garden State Parkway service area has a new, less confusing name, honoring a salsa legend and New Jersey hall of fame member.

on the Parkway which was formerly another slightly confusing name, the Cheesequake service area.

Displays about Cruz’s life and career are expected to be installed by March when the service area building name also will be changed to honor Cruz, he said. In 1950, her singing career took off after replacing the lead singer in the popular Cuban orchestra Sonora Matancera. Cruz helped raise the profile of the band and Latin music by touring Central and North America in the 1950s, according to her hall of fame biography. She joined the orchestra of famous bandleader Tito Puente in 1966, and recorded on the Fania record label in the 1970′s.
