In Park Ridge-Niles School District 64, testing shows students are starting to recover from pandemic learning loss, according to Assistant Superintendent Samantha Alaimo.
Educators and parents have been worrying for more than two years that remote learning during the pandemic harmed or hampered children’s learning of fundamental knowledge in math, English and other school subjects. In Park Ridge-Niles School District 64, however, one administrator said tests show students are starting to bridge the learning gap, often called pandemic learning loss.
. The system has three tiers; the first tier has student support addressed by their teacher, and the second tier recommends intervention — if other criteria recommend it as well. At the third tier, an intervention is recommended and students receive more help to get back to the first tier. Student growth has increased the most for students in kindergarten and first grade in the district, according to Alaimo. In September 2021, 24% of kindergarten students were placed in tier three.

Alaimo said that in the last couple of years, a new curriculum to teach reading was introduced to educate students from second to eighth grade. However, the curriculum is in its second year, said Alaimo, and it would be too early to assess how effective it is.
