Parents angry at us striking teachers forget we have children too 💬 via ipaperviews
Many of us will spend the strike days caring for our own children and calculating how to accommodate the loss of several days’ wages – the price we’re paying to stand up for our schools, our pupils and colleagues.
Of course, it’s the Government which has weaponised this sense that striking workers are somehow insulated from the disruption and pain of strikes, laughing merrily as we sleep in until noon, rubbing our hands together in delight as we anticipate a pay rise. The truth is that strikers know all too well that those crucial days often mean– but we desperately hope they will bring about long term gain, for children, for parents, and yes for ourselves as teachers and school staff.
The same is true, of course, across other striking professions. Take recent nurse and paramedic strikes for example – most nurses are highly unlikely to have their own private health care – and are just as likely to suffer any inconvenience or lack of service as any other member of the “public”. Because they are members of the public – and in a far more meaningful way than most government ministers.
