The parasite Toxoplasma gondii can influence some animals to become bold and risky, leading Yellowstone wolves into risky territory.
After analyzing blood samples collected from 229 anesthetized wolves and 26 years of behavioral and distribution data, the study authors found that the parasite was more likely to infect wolves living in an area with a higher cougar population. According to the study, infected male wolves had a 50 percent probability of leaving the pack within six months, while uninfected male wolves would typically disperse from the pack after 21 months. Infected female wolves had a 25 percent probability of leaving the pack within 30 months, whereas uninfected female wolves would typically leave after 48 months.
