A woman says a scammer swiped her necklace as she ‘thanked’ her for giving directions outside of a Palo Alto drug store.
Police advised residents to use caution after a common jewelry scam led to the theft of a necklace valued at more than $1,000 off the neck of a woman outside of a Palo Alto Walgreens.
Authorities received a call at 11:11 a.m. Thursday reporting a jewelry theft in the parking lot of Walgreens at 4170 El Camino Real. The victim, a woman in her 60s, said that after she had gotten out of her own vehicle, a couple in a white sedan pulled up to her and asked for directions to the freeway.
The victim obliged, and a woman in the car motioned for the woman to approach the vehicle, police said. When the victim approached, the suspect thanked her and placed a ring upon her finger, which the woman declined and returned. The female suspect then exited the vehicle and put a necklace around her neck.
After they parted ways, the victim noticed the necklace she was wearing prior to the encounter was gone.
