Slumping Xander Bogaerts moved to fifth spot as Padres start starts at Minnesota Twins; Jake Cronenworth hitting second for the first time this year
The other tweak of note is first basemanhitting fourth, the first time the Padres’ left fielder has hit anywhere but second or third.
Soto is third on the team with a .779 OPS, but that’s well below his career numbers and he’s hitting just .220 on the season. The Padres are looking for an uptick in production throughout pockets of the lineup as their one/two hitters rank 18, well below what you’d expect from a $245 million payroll.
It should also be noted that their catchers have the fifth-lowest OPS in the majors and that’s the one spot in the lineup that the Padres have flexibility. The struggling is in the lineup on Tuesday — batting ninth in an order that alternates left and right from top to bottom — but rookie replaced him as a pinch-hitter in a one-run game on Sunday and could begin to see more action.
