Padres catchers have been a strength so far this season; Matt Waldron looking to bounce back from first start of season
Kyle Higashioka joined an exclusive club in his second start of the season on Wednesday. On Sunday, he gets the nod behind the plate — a day after night game — as Matt Waldron climbs the mound for the rubber match at Oracle Park. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. A win would even the Padres’ record at 6-6 and drop the Giants four games under .500 through their first 10 games. The Dodgers are the only team above .500 in the NL West as they are 8-3 to begin Sunday.
Higashioka will bat ninth on Sunday, pushing center fielder Jackson Merrill into the eight hole and third baseman Tyler Wade into the seventh spot. Wade had given way to Graham Pauley a bit after the rookie homered off the bench last Saturday, but Pauley was 1-for-10 with five strikeouts over his next three starts. Wade is hitting .278/.381/.333 on the season, but he is 1-for-10 with two walks and three strikeouts over his last six games .
