Padres pregame: Ji-Man Choi headed to the IL with a rib strain; Garrett Cooper starting at DH and a look at Yu Darvish vs. the Orioles' Grayson Rodriguez.
The Orioles’ top pitching prospect and a top-10 consensus prospect in the game coming into the season, the 23-year-old is averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 74 innings to start his career. He’s also walking nearly four batters per nine innings and allowing 1.6 homers per nine innings. Lefties have a .950 OPS against Rodriguez, while righties have a .722 OPS.
His plus-plus slider remains his top secondary pitch, sitting 79-85 mph with late bite, and he uses different shapes depending on the situation. Rodriguez’s changeup, a pitch he learned in pro ball, is a plus pitch as well, with screwball-like action that works to both sides of the plate. His curveball has above-average potential, and Rodriguez ramped up usage of his new low-90s cutter as the season went on, especially against lefthanded hitters.
