Padres taking a look at minor league journeyman Brandon Dixon as they consider postseason bench
Dixon had a mind-boggling 23 homers to go with a .374/.442/.823 batting line over 51 games as he progressed from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A El Paso, a stint that couldn’t even begin until he convinced the Padres to sign him to a minor league deal after the lockout ended.“My agent texted me, ‘Can you get to Peoria? The Padres want to see you face some live pitchers,’” Dixon said.
More than three months later, Dixon was back on the field in San Antonio and forcing his way back onto the organizational depth chart.“It’s been fun to be able to be a part of yesterday and everything they’ve done and worked toward this season,” Dixon said. “To be a part of that is awesome. I’m just glad I got to be here. Whatever opportunities I get, keep going.”
Second baseman Jake Cronenworth is also out of the lineup as the Padres continue cycling off days to their regulars. Manny Machado sat Monday but is back at third base and in the three-hole. Jurickson Profar is also back in the lineup, in left field and leading off. Manaea entered his last appearance as a bulk reliever, allowing a run in four innings to continue a stretch in which he’s allowed a 3.95 ERA over 13 2/3 innings.
