Padres right-hander Seth Lugo set to return from calf injury on Tuesday at the San Francisco Giants
had not thrown 100 innings in a season in five years and was already at 41 2/3 innings in his return to a rotation when the 33-year-old walked off the mound on May 16 with a right calf strain. Depending on who you speak with, the injury provided a somewhat convenient monthlong break in the Padres’ plan to fully stretch out Lugo again as a starting pitcher, but he still does not see the time off as a silver lining.
One day, Lugo marveled at adding 11 inches of horizontal movement during a bullpen. The action wasn’t quite as pronounced in his most recent simulated or bullpen action — both putting him on target to return to the rotation on Tuesday in San Francisco — but the slider is in a much better spot than it was a month ago, when Lugo was either spiking it in the dirt or throwing it a bit too firm to the plate.
