Joe Musgrove again goes deep into game without allowing a hit; Machado mum on status but could be back as soon as Friday
Nelson Cruz had a tender hamstring Thursday, having felt a twinge trying to beat out a ground ball in the eighth inning the previous night.
“The way the guys have accepted me and welcomed me in, it’s exciting to be able to contribute,” Sánchez said through interpreter Danny Sanchez. The indication from the Padres’ decision makers when Sánchez was acquired was that whoever hits will catch the majority of games. Had Cruz been safe on his ninth-inning grounder, it would have been his fifth hit in his past 34 at-bats. He is batting .118 since May 5. So even though the Padres were facing a left-handed starter Thursday, it was no guarantee Cruz would have been the DH if healthy.
