Peter Seidler’s Padres were spinning their wheels last summer. His spending had put a target on their back. Their bats were not living up to expectations. As the Chicago Cubs rolled into town last June, the Padres’ free-spirited owner — who signed off emails with peace signs and even “All Cool Here” taglines while twice battling and beating cancer — decided an unconventional approach was worth a whirl.

The Padres ended a 14-year playoff drought in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and upset the 111-win Dodgers two years later to forge just the franchise’s third National League Championship Series berth. Despite Seidler's sage, the Padres fell inexplicably short of the postseason in 2023.
