Addition of top starter theoretically makes for stronger rotation and fresher bullpen, allows for patience with prospects
The most important addition of the offseason is getting up to speed. Dylan Cease on Monday night made his unofficial Petco Park debut, and for a guy who started spring training later than all his teammates and went to South Korea on a few hours’ notice , he was OK. 'I wasn't really thrilled with the execution,' said Cease, who allowed three runs on five hits over four innings in an exhibition loss to the Mariners.
Without Cease, Darvish and Musgrove were practically going to have to reach career highs in innings and Michael King was going to have to make a huge jump in innings in his first season as a full-time starter and a whole bunch of young pitchers were going to have to do things that a whole bunch of young pitchers cannot be counted on to do in order for the Padres to get the 850 innings or so that a playoff team generally gets from its starting pitchers.
