The Cardinal beat both Mountain schools to solidify its spot atop the Pac-12.
When Stanford lost two years ago in Pac-12 play, one defeat became two until the Cardinal began a conference winning streak that would reach 39 games. The Cardinal regrouped from a loss at unranked USC to beat both teams who had tied Stanford for the Pac-12 lead at the end of last week. With home wins over No. 8-ranked Utah, 74-62, and No. 24 Colorado, 62-49, fourth-ranked Stanford regained sole possession of first place.
“Every disappointment is a blessing,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said after beating Utah. “Indya was fabulous. We would not have won without her great leadership.” That’s something Stanford did even better than in January 2021 when it lost to Colorado in overtime, then fell to UCLA one game later. But the Cardinal ended that season on top with its third national championship.No. 9 UCLA and USC also had 2-0 weekends while No. 19 Arizona and Oregon State won rivalry games with the Beavers upsetting No. 23 Oregon. That creates a three-way tie – Utah, UCLA and Colorado – for second place , one game behind Stanford.
“We can’t keep doing this,” Oregon coach Kelly Graves said. “We play our butts off and we have these frantic finishes, but you can’t get behind 10 or 12 and then hope to make those comebacks in the Pac-12. It’s the Pac-12 — these teams are too good.”UCLA won by a combined 11 points over Washington and Washington State with USC also fighting its way to close road wins .
USC’s Kadi Sissoko returned from injury, playing for the first time since Dec. 30. She had a game-high 19 points vs. WSU and 15 vs. Washington, which forced overtime on a Lauren Schwartz 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation.
