A Pennsylvania surgeon was fired for allegedly prescribing unproven drugs for treating COVID-19.
A Pennsylvania state House committee on Monday will consider a bill that would free doctors to prescribe off-label drugs for prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
It would give legal protection to doctors who prescribe drugs that aren’t approved for use against COVID-19, including shielding them from disciplinary action by the state licensing board, provided the patient consents to the off-label use. It would require pharmacists to fill the prescriptions, and allow hospital patients to receive the drugs.
The movement comes during a week when a central Pennsylvania woman received attention for connecting people to prescriptions for ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine via Facebook, and a Pennsylvania surgeon was fired for allegedly prescribing the drugs for use against COVID-19. Doctors continue to tout COVID-19 as the best protection, and point to statistics showing that unvaccinated people account for the vast majority who have become severely ill or died of COVID-19 in recent months.
