CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Striking a motor vehicle with an axe and stealing a cellphone from a campsite have led to jail time for a P.E.I. man.

"The incident with the axe, that could have gone a lot worse," said Chief Judge Jeff Lantz at sentencing for Grant Adam Cudmore on Aug. 29 in provincial court in Charlottetown.

Earlier at that court appearance, Cudmore, 45, pleaded guilty to two counts of mischief, theft, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, driving while disqualified and missing court.Crown attorney John Diamond told the court that on July 20, Cudmore and a woman broke into a cabin at the Winterbay campground in Mill Cove and slept there for the night. A person at the campground also reported that his cellphone had been stolen.

Cudmore was located by police on July 22 at the Community Outreach Centre in Charlottetown and arrested and charged with mischief for breaking into the cabin and theft of the cellphone.
