'Nobody blinks an eye when the capital budget comes down and there is a paving cost of half a billion dollars over five years. People are ok with that. But they seem to be not ok with the fact that we need to provide housing for people.'
Karla Bernard, Green candidate for Charlottetown-Victoria Park, and Green party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker announced a number of measures aimed at investing in affordable housing. These include investing $385 million into new public housing construction over five years and committing at least $100 million to buy up existing rental units over four years. - Stu Neatby/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.
The Green plan would involve $385 million spent on new public housing over five years as well as an additional $100 million on buying up existing rental residential and commercial buildings to convert them to public housing. "The King government has dragged its heels on housing, and Islanders from Tignish to Souris and, of course, everywhere in between are suffering because of that."When asked about the high cost of this investment, Bevan-Baker said he believes there are significant federal funding programs, like the rapid housing initiative, that could help cover the cost.
