Only four of the 23-strong England squad have been recognised in the New Year’s honours list - plus an honorary gong for Sarina Wiegman
In a year marred by war, the Queen’s death and political turmoil, the Lionesses’ Euros victory in July was a rare high point of 2022.
It is disappointing and a huge missed opportunity, then, that only four of the 23-strong England squad have been recognised in the New Year’s honours list – plus an honorary gong for Dutch national Wiegman. Sir Hugh Robertson, the chair of the Sports Honours Committee, said the decision was taken in part because the victory was “a European competition and not a world one”, while there was also a “danger in sort of carpet bombing the entire squad because then you get people who’ve done five minutes on the pitch and get an award”.
