The Orioles mostly deployed Mancini as a designated hitter this season. He made 51 of his 93 starts at DH, batting .264 with a .771 OPS. Trey Mancini, celebrating a homer with Yordan Alvarez, could see action as designated hitter or outfielder or first base.“I just feel like I'm going to move around wherever they need me that day, whether it's DH, first, outfield, whatever they need me to do,” he said. “I'm comfortable coming off the bench to pinch-hit in any situation.”
The benefit of having Mancini’s bat in the lineup is obvious. The Astros got an early taste of Mancini’s batting chops when he homered for his first three hits with the club, and he is averaging .266 on the season. But starting Mancini regularly at designated hitter risks displacing All-Star slugger Yordan Alvarez, an only sometimes left fielder.
“It was really good for me to just kind of get thrown into the fire,” he said. “You go into fight-or-flight mode, so you learn a lot in that situation, and I think that really prepared me for anything. It actually can't be understated how important it is. So yeah, that's why, I think, nothing really rattles me in any way in that regard.”
