This lawsuit has been over a year in the making, culminating in a nine-day voting rights trial in the city of Billings this summer. Toward the end of the trial, all eyes were on one witness: Representative Geraldine Custer. Afteryou could say she is an expert in all things voting, lawmaking, and democracy.
Custer gave candid, frank insight into the Republican lawmaking machine. She chastised her colleagues for elevating the false narrative of election fraud: “I felt like I had been punched in the gut because as an election administrator, we understand every detail and that they’re secure."In the midst of the 2021 Montana legislative session, Republican leadership made last-minute additions to the law that defied previous agreements made in committee. These bills are part of a bigger trend of laws passed across the country that are intended to make voting harder for people like you and me. If you were confused about the meaning of the bills and their impact, that’s okay. We were too, and it’s our job to understand election laws in our state! These bills are complicated, hard to explain, and hard to comprehend.
