The James Beard Foundation released its list of finalists for the 2022 Restaurant & Chef Awards this week, and food critic Alison Cook has opinions. Some are sweet, some are salty.

For years Bobby Heugel and, again to my frustration. But under the new JBF procedures, Heugel’s mentee and former business cohort, Alba Huerta, has cracked the finalists’ list in that category. Good for her. It’s about time Houston scored that Outstanding Bar Program award, if you ask me, and it’s great to see a highly skilled woman overseeing a finalist in the category.

Now none of the former winners vote, I have learned, although I was unable to find that big change mentioned on the foundation’s website. Instead, voting is confined to 12 regional panels of 17 experts tapped by the subcommitee chairs from each region, and approved by JBF leadership. They are selected with diversity in mind. Instead of “judges,” they are now called “scouts” and “tasters.”

and Tony J. Nguyen of Xin Chào, Ha’s first freestanding restaurant after her food-hall smash, The Blind Goat.. Yeah, Bellaire has a finalist for Best Chef Texas, and he’s from Alief, which cheers me up despite my general JBF dyspepsia and skepticism about their trumpeted reforms.
