Something similar happened in our discussion of race. Van Duyne said she does not believe that systemic racism exists, but acknowledged “long-standing systemic failure” to ensure equality and opportunity for all Americans, especially in urban centers. She proposed reforms in the areas of education, jobs, and housing to “help people accumulate wealth and transfer that to the next generation.” She favors initiatives specific to relieving the heavy burden of student debt.
In her freshman term, Van Duyne sponsored 16 bills, none of which passed into law, though that’s not surprising for a minority representative. Of those, only one, the Supply Chain Vulnerability Assessment Act of 2021, could be described as bipartisan. Only one of the 42 co-sponsors she found for her other 15 bills was a Democrat.
We see Van Duyne as someone caught between the need to espouse strident party rhetoric and the desire of an experienced public servant to actually solve problems for her constituents. We would suggest that to know which of those impulses wins out is to know how effective Van Duyne will be in office.
Van Duyne has drawn a primary challenger this year, Nate Weymouth, 55, a pharmacologist whose campaign seems to consist of internet memes with libertarian themes. Based on his tweets, he opposes mRNA vaccines and is skeptical of CDC messaging during the pandemic. He doesn’t seem to have a campaign website, did not answer questions on our candidate questionnaire, and did not participate in our candidate interviews.
