Our recommendation for the 30th Congressional District | Opinion
Dallas Morning News EditorialWe recommend Democrat Jasmine Crockett over Republican James Rodgers for the 30th Congressional District, the seat that retiring U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson has held for nearly 30 years.
Crockett, 41, roiled the political establishment two years ago when she won the contest to represent District 100 in the state Legislature. Her political profile continued to rise when she took a leading role in the decision by Texas Democrats to break quorum last year and flee to Washington, D.C., in a failed attempt to stop GOP legislation to toughen election rules.
An attorney with a civil rights background, Crockett is emerging as a national figure for progressive issues and solutions such as federal spending on infrastructure, developing affordable housing, protecting voting rights, passing a federal law to protect abortion choice, and legalizing marijuana to reduce drug-related crime and violence.
We urge Crockett to follow Johnson’s path to focus on delivering local leadership that will make a difference to the district and the region and not let her ascension into a measure of national prominence get in the way of delivering old-fashioned constituent services.
