Created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, Our Flag Means Death blends romantic comedy with period drama on the high seas. Loosely based on real historical figures, the series chronicles the adventures of Stede Bonnet and the crew of the pirate ship Revenge, detailing their often hilarious exploits and encounters, including crossing paths with the infamous Blackbeard. Our Flag Means Death is a swashbuckling romantic comedy with action elements that loosely tells the true story of a would-be pirate in the 18th century, Stede Bonnet. Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby, trades in his comfortable life for one of a buccaneer. However, when Stede becomes captain of a pirate ship, he finds the life of a pirate isn't all open seas, freedom, and fun - managing a crew with expectations to perform acts of piracy to be managed Isn't that simple.
Additionally, with the dangers of acting as a force against the British Navy, Stede has his work cut out for him. Though initially struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew. Stede's fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi. After much campaigning, the show finally saw a renewal for a second season and began filming in September of 2022.
