Agreement signed Thursday builds on earlier agreements, commits federal government and MNO to ongoing negotiations towards a core self-government treaty within the next two years
The federal government and the Métis Nation of Ontario announced on Thursday that they have signed a Métis Government Recognition and Self Government Implementation Agreement.
The agreement recognizes that the Métis Nation of Ontario, as a Métis government, has jurisdiction over matters such as its citizenship, elections and administration matters. The agreement signed on Thursday commits the federal government and the Métis Nation of Ontario to ongoing negotiations towards a core self-government treaty within the next two years.
For generations, Métis have pressed for recognition, building their own self-government structures and institutions, taking part in political and constitutional processes, going to the courts to advance Métis rights and claims and pressing for formal negotiations with Canada. A framework agreement was signed in December 2017 that established a formal negotiation process, recognizing Métis self-government as a priority.
