Prof. Murat Saatçioğlu, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Ottawa, was the special guest speaker at Sunday’s event.The problem is that human memories are not that long, he said. “As soon as there is an earthquake, people recognize the problems. And then they forget about them.” There are building codes, but enforcement is the problem, said Saatçioğlu. “There is no lack of know-how, but a lack of enforcement.”Article content
There is a lot of work to be done to avoid this kind of devastation in a large city like Istanbul, which has a population of 15 million people, said Dr. Refika Ersu, a respirologist at CHEO and the president of the Canadian Turkish Women’s Association of Ottawa, which was one of the organizers of the fundraiser.
