An Ottawa man has been fined $10,000 after being found with 10 times the allowable limit of walleye after being at a remote fly-in fishing camp north of Armstrong.

The Ministry of Natural Resources said the angler pleaded guilty to possession of fish over the legal limit and possession of fish packed in a manner that could not easily be counted, with the fine and a one-year prohibition for having an Ontario fishing licence and engaging in any fishing activities after the case was heard in a Thunder Bay court last month.

The ministry said conversation officers received information on June 21, 2021 that a group at a camp on Whitewater Lake were in possession of several bags of fish, potentially over the legal limit. A vehicle was stopped in Thunder Bay, where the man was found with eight bags of frozen, skinless fish, and one large northern pike. The bags were found to have 140 pieces of fish, totalling 40 walleye and five northern pike.
