The Ottawa BlackJacks are hoping that bringing back an established core of players will be the ticket of success.

While it’s not yet official, it’s believed the BlackJacks are also working on bringing back Berhanemeskel, the former University of Ottawa Gee-Gees star who was heartbroken at not being able to compete in the Final Four last summer due to his European commitments.

“I’m excited to see our core guys back,” general manager Jevohn Shepherd said. “It’s huge. The league is such a short window. It’s a three-month league, so I think when you have continuity, it expedites that process of building that chemistry and that cohesiveness and you can win, you can squeeze by two or three games with that. That’s an extra possession because guys know where or a guy gets an open shot because of the discipline between guys.

Finding a winning recipe in the CEBL is a tricky science. At the best of times, it’s a balancing act of mixing and matching the best available U.S. talent , with Canadian and European players. The quality of play is high, but if a national team comes calling for a summer training camp, that typically takes precedence over the CEBL contract. Many European teams also want their players to arrive early for their next season, meaning some players leave early, before the end of the CEBL season.

“You have to just be able to pivot when it comes, so I think the key there is trying to have a number of guys that can play different positions and be versatile, so that that anytime something pops up or anything may happen, a guy can slide up a position or slide down a position,” Shepherd said.Article content

BlackJacks coach James Derouin, who doubles as head coach of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, acknowledges that the ever-changing nature of a CEBL roster was originally difficult to deal with it. Over time, though he has learned to recognize that it is one of the factors that makes the league unique, similar in a sense to the American Hockey League or triple-A baseball, where the top players often jump back and forth from the big leagues.
