A version of this plan was floated for the 2019 ceremony, but was met with such strong backlash that the traditional show was reinstated. Since the news broke on Tuesday, there's been a similar level of backlash to the Academy's decision to sideline certain categories that aren't viewed as popular as others.
The Academy has already made several notable changes for its March 27 show, set for the Dolby Theatre, including the creation of a, which will go to the film chosen by the general public. The Academy has the difficult task of attempting to create a show that won't follow in the footsteps of the past few telecasts, which have seen a consistently steep drop in ratings.
