Pierre Poilievre said Trudeau should abandon the special rapporteur process and instead call a public inquiry into foreign interference.

Since leaving the office of governor general in 2017, Johnston has served as commissioner for federal leader’s debates and has been a member of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.

In 2016, two Chinese billionaires gave $200,000 donation to the foundation and pledged $800,000 to the University of Montreal. In a press conference, Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet said he has met Johnston a few times and the former governor general seems like “quite the gentleman”.
