Opioid crisis spurs state of emergency from Treaty 6 Chiefs, calls for more harm reduction ableg abpoli

The Confederacy said recovery and treatment beds promised to First Nations are in most cases inaccessible or non-existent, a lament echoed by NDP Indigenous relations critic Brooks Arcand-Paul.Article content

He told Postmedia Monday there are multiple crises facing Indigenous people that the province needs to recognize and tackle urgently. “Our people are dying, and this government is burying its head in the sand when it comes to harm reduction,” he said, noting it is a holistic approach that isn’t just safe consumption sites or drug testing, but also addressing STI outbreaks, suicide rates, and access to mental health supports across the province.

When she was asked last week about any immediate action in response, Premier Danielle Smith said her government is just beginning to implement its recovery-oriented system of care, which emphasizes a focus on getting more people into treatment spaces over harm-reduction approaches such as safe supply.

“We do not believe that there is such a thing as a safe supply of opioids. We believe that we have to make sure that we have pathways for people to get out of this terrible addiction,” she said.
