Is democracy in decline and autocracy on the rise? Putin thinks so, and has chosen to strike. What’s our most potent weapon against autocratic thugs like Putin? Double down on democracy and show the world our system works.
Let’s pledge to show unity and strengthen our essential institutions. In Russia, Putin harasses, jails and poisons political opponents. In the U.S., let’s pledge to honor voting rights and support fair elections. In Russia, Putin churns out disinformation and ruthlessly silences anyone who disagrees with him. In the U.S., let’s pledge to honor the truth and support our free press.
In Russia, corruption is rife, and no court would ever dare to rule against Putin. In the U.S., let’s pledge to honor justice and support an independent judiciary.If we do these things, democracy will prevail, here and in Ukraine, and the likes of Putin won’t stand a chance.
