I received a call many years ago from a local politician who wanted my legal advice on what he termed an “awful” dilemma. His best friend was involved in a messy divorce and wanted him to testify in court that the friend hadn’t engaged in marital infidelities. The politician asked if there was any way he could avoid telling the truth under oath.

I quickly thought of the ancient English maxim: The only time a gentleman is justified in lying is when defending another gentleman’s honor under oath. But I withheld that bit of whimsy.
