Opinion: While we have much work to do to make our democracy more inclusive, Olivia Chow’s win is a win for Canadian women in politics and especially for immigrant women of colour regardless of where you lie on the political spectrum.
Until just last fall, Toronto had more city councillors named Michael than people of colour. That changed in October with the municipal elections — and the city council has changed massively again this week.
Scarborough is home to some of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Canada. Per the 2021 census, 77 per cent of Scarborough identifies as racialized and many are either first or second generation immigrants. Chow won five of the six Scarborough wards, pulling in 47 per cent of the vote in Scarborough North in particular.More political engagement if candidates look like youThere are certain factors that promote civic engagement for immigrants and refugees.
And, running for office as a racialized candidate can be even harder. Running for office requires hundreds of thousands of dollars to run a campaign, as well as social networks for donations and endorsements.white men who ran federally in 2015 and 2019 were better supported financially and ran in easier-to-in ridings
Immigrants caught up in the day-to-day are trying to survive, sometimes even generations later. And oftentimes, immigrants and refugees report low levels of social belonging.and, by extension, participating in the political process. This leads to less involvement in civic activities and an underrepresentation of certain demographics participating in formal political processes like voting and running for office.
