If there’s one message Ontario Liberals need to take into this week’s conference, it’s that — and what Edna Mode said. So: pull yourself together, fight, win — and call me when you’re done, I enjoy our visits. Opinion by Jonathan Scott

It starts this weekend in Hamilton. Ontario Liberals should look no further for a guide than a similar convention in Ottawa in 2011, when the federal party was in similar doldrums. Grassroots members rallied themselves to pass a series of reforms designed to open up the calcified institution to new blood, and — critically — new generations. The winning election results less than four years later speak for themselves.

Conversely, if Ontario Liberals fail to enact reforms — a one-member-one-vote leadership race, rather than the delegated system wherein some members are more equal than others, being chief among them — the message will be clear: the Party will be saying it doesn’t get it, it won’t change. The coming leadership race will be the chance to get into the vital matters of policy and messaging — and there’s already three solid prospective candidates. The race will be the chance to hash out what being a Liberal means when the largest demographic cohort are now millennials.

The political centre isn’t some fixed place like Mecca: it’s something created, and the job of leadership is to inspire people, to create a new policy centre that the majority of people feel fits their needs.
