Trudeau government lacking credibility on Chinese domestic threats. Canadians should be able to have confidence in a flat-out statement by the prime minister, especially on an issue of national security. Opinion by andrewphil
Does he stand by his claim that CSIS didn’t do what he believes it should have done? Was he misinformed? Was he lying? Is there some kind of massive miscommunication here, and if so what is it? Who’s running this show?
The government has clearly lost control of this issue. Every time a new revelation from whistle-blowers in the intelligence community surfaces it treats it like a communications problem to be finessed until public attention fades. It hasn’t come to grips with the substance of the problem. That’s become even more obvious as it dithers over what to do about a Chinese “diplomat” named Zhao Wei, identified by CSIS as involved in the efforts to “target” Chong .
On Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly summoned China’s ambassador to Canada for a dressing down. But her department said it was still weighing the implications of expelling Wei, who amazingly is still accredited to this country. A government that was on top of the issue would have done those calculations months, if not years, ago as reports of Chinese meddling piled up. It should have been prepared to act when it learned about incidents of interference, not just in response to a media report.
