On June 26, we have a chance to once again shape Toronto’s direction. We need a leader who is not afraid to take a stand, and enact changes that make people safe and communities strong. Opinion by BravoDavenport

Every candidate vying for the mayor’s office will have to contend with the city’s financial reality. After more than a decade of low-tax conservative mayors and austerity policies, Toronto’s budget is under significant strain. Still, we have continued to pour money into enforcement at the expense of vital city services — services that make everyone safer.

There is a high cost to prioritizing policing in our city. There’s the $1.2 billion Toronto Police budget, which dominates our property tax revenue and then there is the cost of over-policing — of systemic discrimination and a failing enforcement-first approach. Despite increased attention, police violence has only increased in recent years; in Canada, instances where police officers have killed members of the publicUnder former Mayor John Tory, money for the police was seemingly sacrosanct.

At the same time, Torontonians are seeing the impact of funding cuts and austerity measures everywhere in our city. Our shelters are full. Our recreation programs are at capacity. Even our streets are crumbling (
