As I say, typically, the potential candidates are just asking one question in this decision period: Can I win? It is often not hard for them to convince themselves they can. Anyone on city council — and those in any public role in civic life in general — is constantly meeting people who tell them they should be mayor. Many of those people are not even in their bathroom mirror in the morning.
Questions about vote splitting also apply to Penalosa and Brown, and rumoured possible NDP candidate Bhutila Karpoche: the progressive left in Toronto seems almost by default to have found its most likely champion in Josh Matlow.
Ana Bailão and Brad Bradford both seem to occupy — and want to occupy — the centre of the political spectrum. I mean, I guess. The question for both of them is, “who the heck are you as a politician on your own?”
